Seminar talk by guest speaker Dr. Bill Brune

Title: Probing the Atmosphere's Oxidation Chemistry

Speaker: Prof. William H. Brune, Pennsylvania State University

Date: Friday, October 25th, 2013

Time: 2:00-3:00PM

Location: Room D213, Chemistry Building
               2036 Main Mall, Vancouver, BC

Improving the understanding of the atmosphere’s oxidation chemistry typically involves three steps: finding mechanisms with laboratory studies, putting the mechanisms in models, and comparing observed and modeled atmospheric constituents. Differences between observed and modeled constituents lead to more laboratory studies and improved measurements and models. The cycle repeats. As the models’ complexity increases, it becomes hard to tell if agreements between observations and models come from improved understanding or simply offsetting errors. A complementary approach is to probe the atmosphere’s oxidation chemistry, not by measuring atmospheric constituents, but instead, by measuring atmospheric processes directly. This talk will include three examples of this approach that we have developed at Penn State: the direct measurements of the OH reactivity, of the ozone production rate, and of potential aerosol mass.
